The quality of the drinking water that flows from taps across Germany is excellent. Besides water quality, other critical factors include the material of pipes, fittings and other components that come into contact with water. According to the German Drinking Water Ordinance, the German Environment Agency is entitled to define evaluation criteria for the hygienic evaluation of materials in contact with drinking water. In future, there will be a legally binding system to replace the current non-binding KTW guidelines. The release of evaluation criteria by March 2019 provides for a transition period of two years until March 2021.
