Dear colleagues,

In spring 2020 we sent out the first digital newsletter, and in the meantime it has become a matter of course for us and hopefully also for you in this form. We are pleased that more than 500 subscribers now want to receive information from TZW regularly. Please feel free to give us feedback on how you like TZW NEWS and which topics are of particular interest to you. Simply send an e-mail to newsletter@tzw.de. This enables us to adapt the newsletter even better to your needs. Thank you very much in advance.

This time we report on topics as diverse as the annual report, water losses, a project with partners in Peru, new German regulations for elastomers in contact with drinking water and the Water Test Network, a European network for product development in the water sector. The articles are complemented by news in brief at the end of the newsletter.

Have an inspiring reading

The new annual report has been published

TZW's Annual Report 2021, which has just been published, offers a review of the past year with its priorities and the research projects completed in 2021. Furthermore, it provides a good overview of the fields of activity at TZW, its organisation and the key figures. Although the year 2021 was still strongly influenced by the pandemic, it also offered new fields of research for TZW. Overall, it was an economically successful year with an increase in turnover in the service areas. It was also encouraging to be able to generate some large German and international projects with significant amounts of funding.

Water leakage

Tracking water losses with digital tools

Water supply companies have a strong interest in monitoring and minimising water losses in their pipe networks. To apply digital methods the experts at TZW are developing algorithms and procedures for pattern recognition in order to analyse water consumption time series and to uncover special features. In this way, consumption anomalies and leakages in water distribution can be identified.

Third amendment of the KTW-BWGL also includes elastomers

Since 7 March 2022, elastomers and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) also fall within the scope of the evaluation criteria document for plastics and other organic materials in contact with drinking water (KTW-BWGL) published by the German Environment Agency UBA. This has been valid since March 2021 and previously already included plastics, organic coatings and lubricants.

Pilot project in Peru on artificial groundwater recharge

A research project is investigating new water resources and innovative wastewater treatment in arid metropolitan regions. The technology of artificial groundwater recharge, which has been tried and tested in Germany, is to be introduced in Peru as a nature-based solution and its potential for the cost-effective provision of high-quality industrial and drinking water in densely populated water-scarce regions is to be demonstrated. In addition to setting up technical pilot plants, an intensive knowledge transfer is to take place together with SEDAPAL, the water supply and wastewater disposal company of Lima. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. In addition to TZW, the University of Stuttgart and ENEXIO Management GmbH are project partners.
