Reduction of groundwater contamination with pesticides

Groundwater sampling

The TZW coordinated action groups at three water supply companies in Baden-Württemberg in which measurements to reduce the input of the active substances of PPP and their metabolites were discussed and defined.

Evaluations of the groundwater database “Grundwasserdatenbank Wasserversorgung (GWD-WV)” show that in Baden-Württemberg the groundwater used for drinking water supply is still contaminated with pesticides. Pesticides or their degradation products are found in more than half of all water protection areas. Therefore, in areas without previous appropriate measures, further steps to reduce inputs of these undesirable substances in groundwater are absolutely necessary.

For some areas with existing pollution, in particular with the PPP active substance bentazon and the PPP degradation product desphenylchloridazon, the TZW conducted area inspections on behalf of the LUBW (State Institute for the Environment Baden-Württemberg) in order to verify the origin of the raw water pollution. The data collected in this way provided an initial basis for discussion, in order to enter into dialogue with the affected actors (water suppliers, farmers, PPP manufacturers and representatives of the authorities) within the framework of the project, using sound technical knowledge.

In three water protection areas, action groups with the affected actors were set up as examples of a possible approach in Baden-Württemberg. Under the coordination of the TZW, measures were discussed and defined which could reduce and, if necessary, completely prevent the introduction of the conspicuous active substances or their metabolites into groundwater.

The recommendations for action derived from these activities describe a realizable systematic for the drinking water supply of Baden-Württemberg in dealing with increasing levels of active substances and metabolites in ground- and raw water.
