BMBF Innovation Atlas: Software tool for risk management in the water supply sector

In the "Innovation Atlas Water" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which can be accessed online, the TZW is represented with a new interactive software application. Using this tool, water suppliers can detect risks for their supply even more precisely. The software was developed as part of the BMBF research project TRUST.

The funding program "Water: N - Research and Innovation for Sustainability" from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) forms the framework concept for the funding of sustainable water research. The goal is the advancement of innovative environmental solutions and sustainable water management. The free online service "Innovation Atlas Water" presents innovative products from BMBF-funded water research. In addition to technologies and processes, it also includes management concepts, software tools and educational materials for the sustainable use of water as a resource. The Innovation Atlas is constantly updated and expanded to include relevant results from current funding measures.

As part of the TRUST project, TZW has worked with the technology company disy Informationssysteme GmbH from 2017 to 2021 to develop a prototype tool that will enable water utilities to conduct more efficient data-based risk analysis. It supports the targeted management of water resources and forms the basis for developing monitoring systems and other measures to safeguard water quality. A significant added value compared to already available tools for the preparation of a Water Safety Plan (WSP) is the extension by the spatial component via the integrated GIS. In addition to land use information, for example, data on area characteristics such as slope and soil type as well as distance to the point of withdrawal can be included in the assessment.

In the recently approved follow-up project Risk_Plus, which is also funded by the BMBF's “KMU innovative” program, TZW and disy plan to further develop the tool until 2023. The goal is to evaluate the entire process chain of water supply. In addition to risk management, the tool will then also support risk-based monitoring programmes in accordance with the new EU Drinking Water Directive.
