Legionella species in drinking water installations are a key challenge for the drinking water supply in the context of climate change and the utilization of renewable energy sources.
Temperature alterations in both potable water hot (PWH) and potable water cold (PWC) increase risks to drinking water hygiene. Rising ambient temperatures lead to warming of cold drinking water, which promotes the growth of Legionella species. At the same time, hot water temperatures might be reduced in order to achieve CO₂ reduction goals, further increasing the risk of Legionella proliferation.
The project aims to develop a foundation for a scientific-based risk assessment and management approach for drinking water installations operating under altered temperature conditions. Risks will be identified and measures for risk control will be derived to ensure hygienically safety.
The project is carried out by the TZW and the Chair of Building Energy Systems and Heat Supply of the Dresden University of Technology, which both possess extensive expertise in Legionella research based on previous research projects.
